⏰ Annual DGFT Compliance

Your IEC Could Get Deactivated — Renew KYC Now

DGFT mandates that every IEC holder must update their KYC details annually between April and June. If you haven't updated yet, your Importer Exporter Code faces automatic deactivation — meaning no customs clearance, no exports, no imports, and no access to RoDTEP/RoSCTL incentives.

📅 Deadline: June 30, 2026 — Don't wait until the last week

What Happens If You Don't Renew?

Non-compliance has real consequences for your business

🚫

IEC Deactivated by DGFT

Your IEC status changes to "Deactivated" in the DGFT system from July 1. ICEGATE blocks all shipping bills and bills of entry.

💰

Lose Export Incentives

No active IEC means you cannot file for or claim RoDTEP, RoSCTL, DFIA, or any other export promotion scheme benefits.

📦

Shipments Stuck at Customs

Import and export consignments get held at ports. Demurrage and detention charges pile up while your IEC remains inactive.

🏦

Bank Payments Disrupted

Banks may hold international trade payments and foreign remittances if your IEC details don't match or are inactive.

What Is IEC KYC Renewal?

The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to businesses engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India. While the IEC has lifetime validity, DGFT mandates that all IEC holders must electronically update or confirm their business details every year between April 1 and June 30.

This annual compliance requirement was introduced through DGFT Notification No. 58/2015-2020 dated February 12, 2021. The purpose is to keep the national exporter-importer database accurate and current — whether you have changes in your business details or not, you must log in and confirm your IEC profile each year.

If the annual update is not completed by June 30, the IEC is automatically deactivated in the DGFT and ICEGATE systems from July 1 onwards. A deactivated IEC cannot be used for any customs clearance, export incentive claims, or international trade operations until it is reactivated through the update process.

Who Needs to Renew?

Every entity that holds an IEC must complete the annual update — this includes proprietorship firms, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies, trusts, HUFs, and societies. The requirement applies even if you haven't imported or exported anything during the year. The only exception is if you have formally surrendered your IEC through the DGFT portal.

What Is the Difference Between IEC Renewal and IEC Modification?

IEC renewal (annual KYC update) is the process of confirming that your existing IEC details are current and correct — even if nothing has changed. IEC modification involves changing specific details such as business address, bank account, contact information, or adding/removing directors and partners. Both can be done simultaneously during the annual update window on the DGFT portal.

Can a Deactivated IEC Be Reactivated?

Yes. If your IEC has been deactivated due to non-renewal, you can reactivate it by completing the annual update on the DGFT portal. Once the update is submitted with proper authentication (either through Digital Signature Certificate or Aadhaar-based e-Sign), the IEC status is restored and transmitted to the ICEGATE/Customs system. There is no separate government penalty for late renewal — the penalty is the business disruption itself. BuyExim handles deactivated IEC reactivation as part of our standard service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about IEC KYC renewal

Yes, it is mandatory for all IEC holders. IEC KYC renewal is the annual electronic update/confirmation of your Importer Exporter Code details on the DGFT portal. As per DGFT Notification No. 58/2015-2020, every IEC holder must complete this between April 1 and June 30 each year — even if there are no changes to your business details. It's not a renewal in the traditional sense (IEC has lifetime validity), but a mandatory annual compliance confirmation.
Your IEC will be automatically deactivated by DGFT from July 1. Once deactivated, ICEGATE will block all shipping bills and bills of entry — meaning no customs clearance for imports or exports. You also cannot claim export incentives (RoDTEP, RoSCTL, DFIA etc.) or process international payments through banks until the IEC is reactivated. There is currently no monetary penalty, but the business disruption itself is the real cost — stuck shipments, demurrage charges, and lost export incentive claims.
For a standard annual update with no changes: PAN card of the business, Aadhaar card of the authorized signatory (for e-Sign OTP authentication), current IEC certificate, cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and your DGFT portal login credentials. If you're also modifying details (address, bank, directors), you'll need supporting documents for each change — such as new address proof, updated partnership deed, or board resolution. We provide a complete checklist once you submit your request.
Yes, absolutely. IEC reactivation is included in our standard service. The process is the same as the annual update — we log into the DGFT portal, update/confirm your details, and submit with authentication. Once DGFT processes it (usually within hours to one business day), your IEC status changes to active and the updated status is transmitted to ICEGATE and Customs systems. You can resume trade operations immediately after.
Once you share all required documents and complete authentication (DSC or Aadhaar OTP), the DGFT system processes the renewal almost instantly. The updated e-IEC certificate becomes available for download within a few hours. Our average end-to-end turnaround from document submission to confirmed renewal is 24-48 hours.
The annual IEC KYC update itself has no government fee — it's a free compliance process on the DGFT portal. BuyExim's service fee of ₹1,499 covers our expert handling of the entire process including document verification, portal submission, authentication support, and post-renewal verification. You pay only after your IEC is successfully renewed.
Yes. DGFT allows two methods of authentication: Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Aadhaar-based e-Sign (OTP). If you don't have a DSC, we can process your renewal using Aadhaar e-Sign — you just need your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to receive the OTP during submission. Most of our clients use the Aadhaar OTP method as it's faster and doesn't require any hardware token.
Yes. The annual IEC update is mandatory for all IEC holders regardless of whether you've conducted any trade activity during the year. If you no longer need your IEC, the proper course of action is to formally surrender it through the DGFT portal. Until surrendered, the annual update requirement continues to apply.
You can check your IEC status in two ways: (1) On the DGFT portal — go to "Services" → "IEC Profile Management" → "View/Print IEC" and enter your IEC number, or (2) On the ICEGATE portal — go to "Services" → "Check IE Code/BIN Status" and enter your IEC. The system will show whether your IEC is Active, Deactivated, or Suspended. If you're unsure, share your IEC number with us and we'll check for free.
