DGFT mandates that every IEC holder must update their KYC details annually between April and June. If you haven't updated yet, your Importer Exporter Code faces automatic deactivation — meaning no customs clearance, no exports, no imports, and no access to RoDTEP/RoSCTL incentives.
Non-compliance has real consequences for your business
Your IEC status changes to "Deactivated" in the DGFT system from July 1. ICEGATE blocks all shipping bills and bills of entry.
No active IEC means you cannot file for or claim RoDTEP, RoSCTL, DFIA, or any other export promotion scheme benefits.
Import and export consignments get held at ports. Demurrage and detention charges pile up while your IEC remains inactive.
Banks may hold international trade payments and foreign remittances if your IEC details don't match or are inactive.

The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to businesses engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India. While the IEC has lifetime validity, DGFT mandates that all IEC holders must electronically update or confirm their business details every year between April 1 and June 30.
This annual compliance requirement was introduced through DGFT Notification No. 58/2015-2020 dated February 12, 2021. The purpose is to keep the national exporter-importer database accurate and current — whether you have changes in your business details or not, you must log in and confirm your IEC profile each year.
If the annual update is not completed by June 30, the IEC is automatically deactivated in the DGFT and ICEGATE systems from July 1 onwards. A deactivated IEC cannot be used for any customs clearance, export incentive claims, or international trade operations until it is reactivated through the update process.
Every entity that holds an IEC must complete the annual update — this includes proprietorship firms, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies, trusts, HUFs, and societies. The requirement applies even if you haven't imported or exported anything during the year. The only exception is if you have formally surrendered your IEC through the DGFT portal.
IEC renewal (annual KYC update) is the process of confirming that your existing IEC details are current and correct — even if nothing has changed. IEC modification involves changing specific details such as business address, bank account, contact information, or adding/removing directors and partners. Both can be done simultaneously during the annual update window on the DGFT portal.
Yes. If your IEC has been deactivated due to non-renewal, you can reactivate it by completing the annual update on the DGFT portal. Once the update is submitted with proper authentication (either through Digital Signature Certificate or Aadhaar-based e-Sign), the IEC status is restored and transmitted to the ICEGATE/Customs system. There is no separate government penalty for late renewal — the penalty is the business disruption itself. BuyExim handles deactivated IEC reactivation as part of our standard service.
